Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To
Mul-T-Lock builds cylinders that look similar but pin differently across three main lines. The Classic series uses a standard dimple keyway with telescoping pins. Interactive+ adds a moving element in the key itself. MT5+ layers in a magnetic pin at the rear. Each needs its own pin kit, and a Classic rekey kit will not service an Interactive+ cylinder. We check the key bow stamp first - “MTL 800” for Classic, “MTL 900” for Interactive+, “MTL 500” for MT5+ - then confirm with the cylinder face markings.
Texas heat cycles matter here. We’ve seen Interactive+ cylinders in west-facing doors from The Woodlands to Round Rock develop sticky pins when summer attic heat bleeds through the frame. OEM Mul-T-Lock pins are sintered brass with a nickel flash; quality aftermarket equivalents from LAB or Major match the spec but vary in the flash thickness. For a rekey on a high-use commercial entry, we prefer OEM. For a residential deadbolt that’s rekeyed every few years, the aftermarket pins we stock perform identically and keep your cost down.

Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key catches or sticks at the same rotation point every time. This usually means a single pin chamber has worn oversize, or debris from Texas dust storms has packed behind the pin stack. The cylinder can still operate but is grinding itself larger.
- You’ve lost track of who has a working key. After a contractor, housekeeper, or former tenant, a Mul-T-Lock rekey resets the keying without replacing hardware. It’s the fastest way to restore control of who enters.
- The key works in one cylinder but not a matching Mul-T-Lock on the same property. Mixed keyways from a partial rekey years ago, or a cylinder swapped in from another job without matching. We key alike or master-key the set properly.
- Key extraction takes force, or the key comes out with brass shavings. Worn pin chambers are scoring the key blade. Continuing to use it will eventually break the key off, which turns a rekey into an extraction plus rekey.
- Recent break-in attempt with visible cylinder scratches. Mul-T-Lock’s dimple keyway resists picking better than standard pin-tumbler, but drill marks or pry damage can deform chambers. Rekeying after an attack only makes sense if the cylinder body is intact.

A Mul-T-Lock cylinder can be removed from a standard deadbolt with two screws. If you’re mechanically inclined, you can bring the cylinder to us and skip the trip charge. What goes wrong: the follower tool slips, springs launch across the garage, or the Interactive+ sidebar drops into the housing and requires full disassembly. The MT5+ magnetic pin is easy to install backwards, which leaves the cylinder dead until we rebuild it.
We don’t recommend full pin kit work at home. The chambers are tight tolerance, and Texas humidity can corrode exposed springs before you finish.
