That’s the compatibility gotcha we run into most often: a property owner orders M3 master pins for a Biaxial system, or vice versa, and nothing aligns.
Identification starts with the key itself. Biaxial keys show angled cuts on both edges of the blade. M3 keys have the same angled cuts plus a small notch near the bow. X4 keys look almost flat by comparison, with tiny dimple holes along the side. If the cylinder face is accessible, the model number is stamped between the plug and the cam tail. For master key systems, we also need to know the current pinning code or the original bitting specification - without it, we’re guessing at the master pin heights, and Medeco’s tolerances are tight: master pins range from 0.015″ to 0.120″ in 0.015″ increments, with even a single step error causing intermittent failure.
OEM Medeco master pins and drivers are sintered brass with a nickel flash, and they last roughly 15-20 years in normal Texas indoor conditions. Signs Your Medeco Master Key Systems Is Failing
- The change key works, but the master key doesn’t. This points to a sheared or displaced master pin in one chamber. The change key only needs the bottom pins to align at the shear line, while the master key requires the master pin to sit precisely between them. When that middle pin cracks or migrates, the master key lifts the stack too high or not high enough.
- Intermittent operation that worsens in summer. Texas humidity and temperature swings cause brass components to expand and contract. In unconditioned utility rooms or exterior gates around Houston, we’ve measured master pin binding during August afternoons when the cylinder hits 110°F internally. The key works at 8 a.m. and sticks at 3 p.m.
- Key requires jiggling or withdrawal to a specific depth. This usually means the master pin has developed a flat spot or the chamber wall has worn an irregular path. Medeco’s angled cuts create lateral torque on each pin, accelerating wear at the master pin’s contact points. Jiggling temporarily finds an alignment, but the damage progresses.
- Master key works on some locks in the system but not others. The system was designed with a consistent master key bitting across all cylinders. Selective failure indicates individual cylinders were re-pinned incorrectly during a previous service, or a master pin was substituted with the wrong height. We see this after cut-rate “locksmiths” who don’t carry the full Medeco pin kit improvise with standard pins.
- Visible brass dust or metallic residue in the keyway. Master pins grinding against chamber walls produce fine debris. In coastal Texas, this dust combines with salt air corrosion to form a paste that accelerates wear. If you see gold-colored residue on your key after insertion, the internal components are already deteriorating.

What you can check: verify you’re using the correct key (Biaxial vs. M3 vs. X4), confirm the keyway is clear of visible debris, and test whether the failure is consistent or temperature-dependent. What you should not attempt: disassembling a Medeco cylinder to replace master pins yourself. The sidebar springs are under tension and will launch across the room. The master pin heights must be selected from a chart based on the specific bitting of your change key and master key - guess wrong, and you’ve created a key that opens multiple units in your building or none at all. Worse, a dropped driver pin can jam the cylinder entirely, turning a $300 service call into a $600 cylinder replacement.
