The critical compatibility gotcha: Medeco3 and Biaxial cylinders can sometimes share the same housing, but their sidebar pins and key blanks are not interchangeable. We’ve arrived at jobs in the Memorial area where a homeowner ordered “Medeco” blanks online and couldn’t figure out why they wouldn’t seat. The sidebar pin chambers on an M3 are set at 15-degree offsets; Biaxial uses 11.25 degrees. Get it wrong and you’re forcing a $12 blank into a $140 cylinder.

- Key works in warm weather, sticks in cold. Brass pins and steel sidebars expand at different rates. We’ve seen this especially in homes near Buffalo Bayou with unconditioned garages - the 40-degree swing between January morning and afternoon loosens the pin-stack geometry.
- Newly cut key works, original doesn’t (or vice versa). One of the angled cuts has worn past its factory depth. Medeco keys are chisel-cut, not milled, so wear accelerates once it starts.
- Lock “clicks” but bolt doesn’t retract fully. The sidebar is lifting but not clearing the housing slot. Often a spring has taken a set after years of compression - common in Montgomery County where hard water mineral dust works into the mechanism.
