The disc detainer mechanism inside an Abloy is fundamentally different from a standard pin tumbler - it rotates discs instead of lifting pins - which means rekeying requires specialized tools and factory-matched key blanks that most hardware stores in Texas simply do not stock.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

We rekey the full current Abloy lineup sold in the United States, plus most legacy models still mounted on Texas doors and gates. The three series we see most often are:

• Protec2 - The rotating disc system with a patented keyway; look for “Protec2” stamped on the key bow and a small oval Abloy logo on the cylinder face. These use 11 discs and require the blue-coded key blanks.
• Sento - The mid-security disc detainer line, common on commercial entry doors in Houston and Dallas medical buildings. Key bows are stamped “SENTO” and cylinders have a rectangular faceplate.
• Classic / Executive - Older brass-bodied cylinders, often found on Texas homes built 1995-2010. The keyway is wider and the key head is unmarked or says “ABLOY CLASSIC.”

Here is the compatibility gotcha that trips up Texas owners: Protec2 keys will not enter a Classic cylinder, but Classic keys can sometimes be forced into a Protec2 - bending the discs and ruining the lock. Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• The key turns but the bolt does not retract. This usually means one or more discs inside the cylinder has worn out of tolerance. Texas humidity can accelerate corrosion on the brass disc edges, causing them to hang up in the open or closed position.
• The key sticks at the 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position. In disc detainer locks, this is the classic symptom of a misaligned disc gate. Dirt, grit from Texas Gulf Coast air, or a bent key can force a disc slightly off its track.
• You need to jiggle the key to get it to turn. The key cuts no longer match the disc positions precisely. This happens after years of use, or immediately if a poorly cut duplicate key was made at a kiosk rather than an authorized source.
• The key works in warm weather but not in cold. Metal contraction in Texas winter snaps can shrink the cylinder housing just enough to bind tight-tolerance discs. If your Abloy is mounted on an exterior gate in Amarillo or Lubbock, this is more common than owners expect.
• You have rekeyed before but now new keys are inconsistent. The cylinder shell itself may be worn. After three or four rekeys, the disc chambers in an Abloy can elongate enough that even fresh discs seat unevenly. At that point, cylinder replacement is the honest recommendation.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no dangerous spring or electrical hazard in rekeying an Abloy cylinder - the risk is financial, not physical. An owner with patience and the correct factory pinning kit can rekey a single Classic cylinder at a workbench. The problem is the tooling: Abloy disc detainer rekeying requires a special vice, disc separators, and depth keys that cost more than our service call. Most Texas owners who try it end up with a cylinder full of mixed discs and no way to sort them.

What you can safely check: confirm your key series by the stamp on the bow, lubricate with graphite (never WD-40, which gums up disc detainers), and verify that the problem is the cylinder and not a sticking deadbolt mechanism.

What goes wrong in DIY: using a standard pin tumbler kit on a disc detainer, forcing a Protec2 key into a Classic cylinder, or losing the tiny disc springs into carpet. At that point, the cylinder is scrap and you are buying a replacement.
