Which Schlage Models This Applies To
Schlage has used the same basic pin-tumbler architecture across most of its residential lines for decades, but the keyway and cylinder type matter. The SC1 keyway (five-pin) covers older A-series knobs, F-series handlesets, and many deadbolts manufactured before 2010. The SC4 keyway (six-pin) is standard on current B-series deadbolts, Camelot and Plymouth handlesets, and most Grade 1 commercial hardware. The telltale is stamped right on the key bow: “SC1” or “SC4” in small letters, or the Schlage logo with no marking at all on pre-1990s originals.

Signs Your Schlage Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key catches at the 2 o’clock or 10 o’clock position. This usually means one or more bottom pins have worn flat spots or developed burrs. In Ohio’s variable humidity, brass pins can oxidize slightly and hang up in the chamber. The lock isn’t broken, but the pin stack is no longer smooth.
- Newly cut key won’t insert fully or turns hard. Either the key was cut on a worn duplicator (common at hardware store kiosks), or the cylinder’s top pins have compressed their springs and are riding too high. We check both: the key and the lock.
- Key works in some locks but not others on the same house. You’ve got mixed keyways or a lock that was previously rekeyed incorrectly. We see this after DIY rekey attempts where a pin was installed upside-down or a spring was kinked.
- Lock was rekeyed recently and now feels loose or sloppy. Someone used the wrong follower tool or forced the cylinder plug out without aligning the top pins. The cylinder chambers may be scored, or a spring has escaped into the lock body.
